He would get his chance when the group naturally disbanded after school. He played his position but yearned for the well-rounded education that comes with the freedoms afforded to a solo artist. He picked up plenty of useful habits but the claustrophobic nature of a group didn’t afford him the space to grow as an artist. Life in ‘Adept’ was a valuable learning curve for a young Raheem. At school Grime was just taking off and scores of his friends thought themselves the next Wiley or Kano, engaging in spirited freestyle sessions at lunch time.Īway from the classroom, he remembers the popularity of bashment and reggae on the radio in a time when the wider tastes of the British public was frequently reflected in the charts. One of five brothers, Raheem naturally took influence from his siblings.
